What you'll do
Food + Grow + Us Kind Kitchen Group is a Durham nonprofit where food meets purpose. Food is the vehicle, never the destination. We use it to build skill, confidence, and community. We believe the kitchen is a classroom, the classroom is a village, and the process is the point. Culinary skill is how we get there. Who you become along the way is why we do it. The Root of It takes that belief outside. This isn't just a cooking class, and it isn't just a garden club either. The Root of It is where care becomes a skill, practiced on a plate and in the soil. There are two rooms and one lesson. The kitchen, our culinary classroom, teaches precision. The garden teaches patience. Both teach that the best things start before anything shows, grow where no one is watching, and can't be rushed. Seed time to harvest isn't two steps. It's a whole cycle of preparing, waiting, tending, gathering, and giving back, and we walk every part of it together. Hard things become second nature when you practice them with intention. Same foundation. Bigger future.
Over the course of the year, during Friday morning club hang time, you'll:
- Meet food with all five senses: see it, smell it, touch it, hear it, taste it. Then dig into the science behind what you noticed.
-Dream big about a garden that's sat untouched, then get your hands in the dirt and bring it back.
-Learn the work no one sees: roots, soil, and decomposition, which is how dead plants break down to feed what grows next.
-Practice a technique until it stops feeling hard, then keep going.
-Follow food all the way around. Kitchen scraps become compost, compost becomes soil, and soil becomes the next meal. Nothing is wasted.
-Catch the click: the moment a technique, a question, or a harvest means more than it did a minute ago.
-End where it was always headed, with a shared harvest: a dish made for someone else, from what you grew.
